Skier takes fan service too far
Japan’s news wires are humming with a report that sounds more like a dirty magazine story about a sex-crazed woman gone wild than a day in the life of a young two-time Olympic medalist.
It seems that Tae Satoya, who was thrust into the big time when she unexpectedly took the gold medal in moguls skiing at the Nagano Olympics, was arrested on February 8 when she launched into a drunken glass-throwing, table-pushing, chair-kicking tantrum at a bar in the Tokyo gaijin ghetto of Roppongi.
The reason for her anger?
A staffer at the bar where she was drinking with her coach tried to stop Satoya from engaging in a sex act with a foreign man who was sitting with her, pants pulled down around his ankles, on a sofa in the VIP room of the establishment.
Satoya also earned a bronze medal in her event at the Salt Lake City Olympics.
But did she get another “Gold Medal” for her “performance.”
March 5th, 2005 at 2:11 amI wonder if she got any points for style and technique.
March 5th, 2005 at 2:18 amI’d give her the gold for that
March 5th, 2005 at 6:38 amNow this is fan appreciation….
Isn’t she retarded? or maybe just really stupid. I saw her interviewed after the Olympics and she didn’t seem to understand the questions and then the interviewer switched to asking really simple questions.
March 5th, 2005 at 11:04 amWOW! I would like to hit her slopes!
I’m surprised that they didn’t just arrest the GAIJIN guy and then blame it all on him. That is usually the ‘normal’ procedure.
March 5th, 2005 at 12:22 pmUpdate: Now it is rumored that she was in the VIP room of ‘911′ and having sex with not one, but two guys at the same time!
And apparently soon after arrested, she was released without charges. A true champion!
However it is also now being reported by Mainichi that all of this has gotten her booted off the Japanese World Cup Team!.
March 6th, 2005 at 1:42 amShe just wanted gold.
That’s all.
In Japanese, testicle calls KIN-TAMA it means “GOLD BALL”.
March 6th, 2005 at 12:23 pmThe actual Japanese translation of Satoya’s apology and the Ski association punishment is not accepting that the story is true. Your English version is more damning of her involvement by indicating this twisted version is being accepted as truth.
The Japan Media adoption of what a gossip magazine wrote (based probably highly on unreliable sources) into a fact by your serious style newspaper is not very responsible journalism. A little investigation into the incident and speaking to all parties; two Nigerian security (one that ran away from Japan because of charges), Ms. Satoya, the Canadian, one bar maid, and the coach would very likely reveal the truth compared to the sensationalism press that has been printed. However, this would have been a lot less juicy for your readers and newspaper sales but it would give the benefit of the doubt to an athlete that has never had a prior incident. Why trade what two Roppongi working Nigerians say for what one Japanese two time Olympic medalist might have to say? Maybe it is a little more work for their staff to search for 100% truth and cost a bit more money than that of plagiarizing a gossip magazines article. But hey, at least they should spend a bit more money on the proper English translation into what is meant in Japanese rather than word-by-word translation. That is why we trust the serious news providers to be the ones to deliver the information with the highest level of accuracy.

Hey publisher, when you write “unexpectedly took a gold medal in 1998 Nagano Olympics” she is the only Japanese women ever to take 2 Olympic medals in winter sports Gold “98″ and Bronze”02″. I guess she can handle the pressure every big event. I am sure she will survive this one also and do what most people can not do, Perform under pressure when it counts. Not like the loser Andrew smith who has poor judgement !
March 9th, 2005 at 12:13 amHey, Jack, “unexpectedly” does not mean “undeservedly.” I don’t think Satoya was expected to win the gold medal going into Nagano. If I remember correctly, the Japanese media reacted to her win with total surprise. Hence, it was unexpected.
March 9th, 2005 at 12:24 amWhat’s up with the name calling Jack? Maybe she just was not able to “perform under pressure” when being interviewed, I dunno.
