Shark takoyaki?!?

This is a good one.
This is a Chinese snack. A friend brought it back from mainland China as an omiyage.

Inside the package, is dried squid.
Outside of the package, is a picture of a shark, and text which says “takoyaki”. Which, as we all know, are fried breaded octopus balls.
What’s going on here? Is this related to the shark-eating octopus?
A bag that has Japanese printed on it will appear to the Chinese consumer to be a product that is being exported to the Japanese market. The consumer will then think that the product must then be better than the usual Chinese stuff to meet the strict demands of the Japanese. Since it’s not actually being exported, accuracy in the Katakana is not all that important.
That doesn’t explain the shark, though. Probably a logo.

October 5th, 2006 at 7:23 amWhat? Nothing to say, remora? With that shark on the package I thought you would suck this right up.
October 5th, 2006 at 8:04 ammy mind is more concerned with eels at the moment - one eel in particular.
October 5th, 2006 at 9:26 amMaybe their Japanese is as bad as mine?
October 5th, 2006 at 2:51 pmI think we should clarify that “takoyaki” does NOT mean the fried and breaded balls of octopi (as one is liable to conclude from the above post), but rather chopped bits of octopus meat embedded in fried balls of dough. Lest some Japan neophyte get the idea that we are eating the reproductive organs of cephalopods…
October 5th, 2006 at 3:29 pmI know this :
“It is not known whether the sharks tolerate the Remora’s presence or are just unable to catch them, but no Remoras have ever been found in a sharks stomach.”

October 5th, 2006 at 7:15 pmI like dried squid snacks.
October 5th, 2006 at 7:18 pmand the squid (Architeuthis) probably finds humans equally tasty….and crunchy.
October 6th, 2006 at 6:20 amIf japan were only it’s food I doubt this website would exist
October 7th, 2006 at 9:29 amDon’t mean to be pedantic but the “taco” on the package is in hiragana…
