Seems to me that, if you were the person in the drawing on the left, and the plane crashed and you somehow miraculously survived, your head would be so far up the ass of the person in front of you that you would be asphyxiated before you could extract yourself.
I am not an expert in these things, though.

I watched them doing tests on Mythbusters. It seems like the brace position (preferably head between legs) does save you. Most people actually survive the crash. But in order to take the impact the seats collapse (that’s where your legs are)…. so you survive, but you have broken legs, so you’re just trapped there waiting to drown or die of smoke inhalation.
I think the safest seat is the air hostess’ seat (but then you also have shit flying at your face when you crash).
When I’m in a crash I’m either going to kick the air hostess out or try kneeling on my seat (to stop my legs from being crushed) with my head inbetween my legs. If it works I’ll let you know.

Remora, thanks for the heads up. I would have been wondering all night about the possible interpretations of “thaifoon” other wise.
I read somewhere that the brace position’s only benefit was to break your neck cleanly and quickly.
