Whale meat redux

JAPUNDIT reader Joshua Richley kindly sent along this shot of a can of whale meat he found in a small neighborhood grocery in Osaka back in April.

Whale meat

So I guess the whale is out there.

To tell you the truth, the last time I ate whale was many moons ago, in the form of whale steak and frozen whale sashimi. I have never had canned whale meat.

My memory is that it was very good both grilled like a steak and dipped in soy sauce as frozen sashimi. After reading that there is a whale meat glut, I wanted to see if recollections about whale meat are accurate. Unfortunately, I still have been unable to locate any.

See how the whale is smiling, beckoning you to eat it? They’re hinting at violating the cardinal rule that cute animals aren’t to be eaten! Gah..

Years ago, I was with a group of Japanese friends at a pub. “Eat this” they said. “What is it?” “Just eat it!”

My motto is: try anything once. I even once ate a grasshopper that had been cooked in soy sauce and sugar. So, I gamely put the morsel in my mouth and promptly SPIT IT OUT! I don’t think I’ve ever done that before.

I was the most foul tasting thing I’d ever experienced. It was whale “bacon,” served raw. I still shudder at the memory.

I hear the ‘red meat’ is actually quite tasty, but there is no way in heck I’m gonna try it after that. BLECH! NASTY!

JP: from what I’ve hear recently, a certain billious pal of ours could steer you in the right direction (apparently Shibuya) if you really insist on trying it.

are you serious? You can’t find it? They sell the shit in cans at my local Sunkus for chrissake. And I live in (da)saitama!
The canned stuff is no good as the sauce is too overpowering. But you can get it at any seafood market also. We bought a steak, cooked half and had the other half raw.
The cooked whale tasted like liver. The sashimi whale was AWESOME. so soft and oily… but in a good way. like ootoro. mmmmm sweet whale

You guys should be ashamed of yourselves, eating whale… Pshh. Are you sure it’s not one of those petfood whale cans coming on the market since there’s so much meat piled up nobody wants?

Thanks JP, good to be back! I just can’t stay away. Now back to ruining my social life. X) Heh, nah - it was an involuntary break, actually.
