Book-shyness survey

The Yomiuri Shimbun conducted a nation-wide survey about book reading concerning several age groups. It unveiled that 49% of the people surveyed said that they haven’t read a book in the last month, with a slight difference of 1% between those in their 20s (49%) and those in their 60s (48%). When asked about what is the best way to remedy book-shyness, 51% chose “directing children to develop the habit of reading at home,” while 47% percent said schools should provide education on reading. The survey also unveiled that Japanese read more for fun than for education, and also that 19% of the youngsters surveyed read electronic books on their mobiles.
