Dokto tantrum may impact Toyota car sales

Toyota Motors, whose cars normally get high marks for high quality in just about every other country in the world, is under fire in South Korea.

Korea’s Construction and Transportation Ministry says that Toyota Korea cars account for almost half of all recalls among imports there.

According to automobile industry “experts” in Korea, people riding in the Lexus RX400h, which is the first hybrid to be offered in the Korean market, may be subjected to electric shock if the car is involved in an accident. Toyota scoffs at this notion, pointing out that there have been no reports of such electric shocks in the United States, where the same type of vehicle is being marketed.

Dokdo IsletsThe high percentage of recalls among foreign car makers in Korea may simply be due to the fact that Korean domestic car manufacturers normally do not announce defects discovered in their vehicles. And the reason that Toyota in particular is being targeted may be due to territorial issues between Japan and Korea.

According to the afternoon newspaper Munhwa, the Japanese carmaker is raising the ire of netizens for dropping the Dokdo Islets, the islets to the east of Korea that Japan also lays its claim to, from its navigation system. The allegation comes on top of complaints that it is selling its cars at inflated prices.

All of this despite the fact that the Dokdo Islets lie 217 kilometers (135 miles) off the coast the Korea mainland, which would make it hard to drive there even if they did show up on your car navigation system. And if you ever did get your Lexus to Dokdo, you would quickly find out that your car navigation system would not be much help there, because there are no roads.
