The Shanghai Daily is reporting that Chinese police have arrested the manager of a factory where it was discovered they were using grease from swill, sewage, and recycled industrial oil to make lard intended for human consumption.
This is only the latest in a continuing line of food and health scandals in China.
In 2004 13 babies died from malnutrition in Anhui after being fed fake baby milk powder.
Last month, farmers were found to be feeding Sudan IV, a cancer-causing industrial dye, to ducks I make the yolk of their eggs redder. In China, red yolks are believed to be extra nutritious and so they command higher prices.
Perhaps this is the time to mention the ice cream bars I bought with my wife in China. It was a hot summer day, but the ice cream tasted like crap. We disposed of the half eaten bars Chinese style, just to the side of the promenade, and continued walking.
We returned an hour later past the ice cream, still laying in the direct sun. It hadn’t melted - even a little.

Wasn’t there a story out of China not long ago about a brand of soy sauce which had human hair as one of its ingredients?
