Sometimes it seems as if Japan has an association for just about everything.
The other day when walking around Tokyo, I came across the headquarters for something called the Japan Rubber Baseball Association.

Is that the hard yellow rubber balls with dimples they use at batting cages?
Now that you’ve discovered rubber baseball, you should check out the Rubber Baseball Exhibition Hall (軟式野球資料室) in Sumida.
A friend told me that young kids in little league use rubber balls (rather than real ones) until they reach late-middle/high school.
I remember the first time I played with a softball. I was a little kid so my dad thought it would a good idea for my little uncoordinated hands to have a large target to catch before we moved to a smaller baseball. We threw the ball around underhand a few times, then on the first attempt at overhand throwing, my dad beaned me in the eye. I ran crying to my mom, we didn’t play baseball again for years (I’m not sure, but I think only one time 8 years later), and I think my dad lost all respect for me.
I wish they had used rubber balls back when I was playing Little League. One day, during a pre-game warmup, a grownup hit me a sharp grounder. Just before it got to my glove, it hit a stone, took an irregular jump, and took out three of my front teeth.
Nanshiki baseballs are hardly soft. They’re basically the balls you hit at the batting cages, and weigh about the same as a standard league baseball. They hurt just as much too.
IIRC, Nanshiki teams exist from little league, and then actually separate in high school into hardball (Koshiki) and rubber ball (Nanashiki) teams and continue up through college and beyond. Nanshiki is essentially for players that aren’t up to snuff at the ‘A’ Team level and beyond.
