Amazing Krispy Kreme adventure
Pop on over to An American In Japan and read about his amazing adventure when he decided to drop into a Krispy Kreme doughnut shop in Japan.
Right as we were getting to the front of the line, I noticed some people, not in line, but just hanging around the front of the store. They stood out to me. Gaijins always stand out among the Japanese, but these people looked Latin. Like they might have been from my hometown, Miami. This one lady, she looked like my high school Spanish teacher. She saw me noticing her, and asked if I would buy a dozen doughnuts for her. After consulting with my better half, I had to tell her no. Sorry, but it just wouldn’t be fair.
“But waiting in this line?” She countered. “That isn’t fair either.” I couldn’t argue with her on that point, so instead, I just walked inside.

April 3rd, 2007 at 1:02 pmThanks for posting this.. I was very curious to know how Krispy Kreme was doing in Japan considering how overly sweet the product is for even some Americans not to mention the Japanese. “But the Japanese doughnuts aren’t quite as sweet as our American versions. The difference is subtle, but its there.” I find this very interesting. Their patented recipe is their heart and soul, I never thought they would actually change it to accommodate their new customers.
Despite the fact the Japanese are notorious for “getting in line” for practically EVERYTHING, I lived in Utah for some time when Krispy Kreme first opened its doors in the late ninties. People in Utah (pure Americans) stood in line for 2hrs for about 3 weeks straight just to get their hands on a dozen glazed. Lazy people were offering the folks in the front of the line $20 to buy a dozen for them in their behalf. Needless to say it was a huge success, and they decided to open two more stores in less than a year. Now it appears that, the customers “got their fill” for the sugar and the stores are as dead as can be to the point they closed one of their stores. The “fad” is definitely come and gone. Japan, being the country of all things “fad,” I wonder how long Krisy Kreme will stick around.
