Talking trash in seven languages

Garbage rulesThe gaijin of Kawasaki can breathe easier now that the Kawasaki Municipal Government workers’ union has decided to post garbage collection rules in seven languages. Multi-lingual garbage nagging was the brainchild Kawasaki Municipal Government environment bureau employee Kim Ku-go, who is described as “a second-generation Japanese-Korean.”

“It’s unfair to criticize foreign residents for not separating their rubbish if they don’t have the information to do it,” Kim said, commenting on his idea for the posters.

The posters contain explanations on the collection days for regular garbage and recyclable garbage in seven languages: Japanese (hiragana), English, Chinese, Korean, Tagalog, Spanish and Portuguese.
