Putting the burro back into the burrito

He-haw

A restaurant in Beijing has come up with a novel way to let its customers know that it serves real donkey meat inside its pasties. They parked a real donkey outside the restaurant with an advertising poster wrapped around it.

The Beijing Youth Daily reports that this extraordinary idea was thought up by one of the staff working in a nearby donkey meat pasty restaurant. He insisted it was the best way for them to prove to their customers they stuffed their pasties with real donkey meat, as more and more fake donkey meat is appearing in the Beijing market.

Now this has really got to get you wondering, doesn’t it? I mean what type of meat do you end up using when you want to fake donkey meat?

Anyway, donkey meat pasties are a popular snack from north China’s Hebei Province.

As a formerly avid devourer of donkeys, usually as donkey stew, I am now a bit concerned. Donkey is rather tasty, and I cannot imagine what, short of human cadavers, the Chinese can cheaply substitute for it. Dog costs more, I think. There aren’t many cats to be had. Spam?

Maybe you’re thinking of Bikkuri Donkey? They’re a chain of hamburger steak-houses with what I think is pseudo-American themed interior.

We enjoyed it until our local outlet closed, but now you have made me think it may not have been ham in those burgers. :???:
