Chinese sports fans show true colors. . . Again.
A group of about 100 Japanese fans were jeered and pelted with paper cups by Chinese fans following an under-22 soccer match between China and Japan in Beijing. The “friendly” match was played in preparation for next year’s Summer Olympic Games in Beijing.
When the final whistle blew, paper cups were thrown at a group of nine Japanese fans who were behind one of the goals and had been holding up a Hinomaru national flag and cheering on the Japanese side.
A group of more than 100 Chinese fans rushed from the stands to an exit, waving a Chinese flag and taunting Japanese fans by chanting disparaging terms such as “Japanese midgets!”
This is not the first time this sort of thing has happened in China, and it makes you wonder if China will be able to keep its populace in line during next years Olympic Games.
Chinese fans can get very ugly at times. Remember their actions during the last Asian Cup soccer tournament a few years ago?
Ironic, however, that a country that is justifiably criticized for trampling on the rights of it citizens is being told here to keep its people “in line” during the Olympics next year.
August 6th, 2007 at 9:20 amand I hope that the Chinese are better behaved over the next few weeks during the Womens World Cup.
They seem determined to bring politics into sport.
If you have time - have a read of this.

August 6th, 2007 at 10:38 amHow is this different from the English, or any other soccer fans for that matter?
August 6th, 2007 at 11:00 amis that English female soccer fans as well Duo? or are they all just lumped in together (male+female+other) under the broad heading “English Soccer fans”.
I’m hoping that the lady fans might demonstrate to the Lads how to behave - and not embarrass their respective countries (as has happened so often in the past).
August 6th, 2007 at 11:45 amHeh, well ok I dunno how the girls behave rem, but I know soccer hooliganism is pretty common worldwide so it’s not just the Chinese. Although the Japanese might actually be an exception to the rule, maybe?
August 6th, 2007 at 12:00 pmFootball Hooliganism adopted to Asian sensibilities.
I guess some people never saw a Manchester vs Arsenal match…
August 6th, 2007 at 12:40 pmand the Japanese Fans even go around and pickup all their litter at the end of the match. (France ‘98).

August 6th, 2007 at 12:42 pmThat’s ALL English footie fans, rem. As you and I know, it’s not an outdated stereotype, it’s a current reality.
And as for no one ever seeing a “Manchester v Arsenal” game, that’s correct. No one has. There’s never been one.
August 6th, 2007 at 1:25 pmI just wouldn’t be too happy to watch some haplesss Japanese lady fans being pelted with cups or other things that’s all - there’s no call for that sort of behaviour.
(The culprits are probably PLA stooges anyway).
