No respect for Miss Universe in Indonesia
Riyo Mori, the Japanese woman who was crowned Miss Universe 2007, received a chilly reception from Muslims when she arrived in the West Java provincial capital of Bandung for charity activity as part of her duties as Miss Universe.
The protesters carried posters saying, “Miss Universe, Go to Hell!” and “Free Indonesia from Pornography!”
Syaiful Abdullah, chairman of the Bandung branch of the hard-line Muslim organization Islamic Defenders’ Front, said beauty should not been exploited because that would be “immoral and sinful.”
In 1990s, Indonesia, a predominantly Muslim nation, banned women from participating in a Miss Universe pageant on grounds that the pageant’s swimsuit contest is not in line with Islamic values.
Despite the ban, the Miss Indonesia organizing committee has been sending the country’s beauty queens to the pageant since 2005 without being punished by the government of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.
It’s hard to take any protests by hard-line muslims seriously. Especially when their co-religionists in Indonesia are beheading little girls in the name of their so-called prophet.
