Reading the signs

Synthesis Friendship Terminal

I pass this sign fairly regularly, but I’ve never turned right and visited the Synthesis Friendship Terminal. I can’t begin to imagine what it is. And there’s something about the mystery that I like, so I don’t really want to find out what it is.

But what do you reckon it is?

My, I guess the term ‘love hotel’’s gone upmarket, then?

Betty Woo Said:

Or is it the verbal equvilant of the theorem that Sex = Death? To which I say, overoften, do *not* go there.

Tigger Said:

I am pretty sure that is where you go to pick up your Honey Doll.

In my Japanese - English dictionary, the first English word for 総合 is “Synthesis”, and for 交流 is “an alternating current”. The second English word for 交流 is “(personnel) exchange”. The Japanese guy who made this English translation must have thought “(personnel) exchange” meant “Friendship”.

Synthesis Friendship Terminal sounds like a place where people make love affairs(Hetero and Homosexual) in their last stage of life. Is the correct translation of 総合交流ターミナル “Center Traffic Terminal” or something ?

I don’t think it’s anything to do with traffic and transport. It’s out in the middle of nowhere. As far as I can see, the only things up that road are a farm and an onsen.

Maybe it’s the Graveyard of Love?

Graveyard of Love? - (I dig it BW!).

A Yahoo search turns up 13,000 hits, with these places all across Japan, in very prefecture. One in Kumamoto (maybe this one?) has onsens, a dining room, a fresh produce market and an ice cream stand.

Looks like the typical “General Exchange Centre” sort of thing that bureaucrats love to build to encourage people to have a life.

Kyoto TERRSA (京都府民総合交流プラザ) is basically a gussied up community recreation and convention center. Adding “terminal” (ターミナル) to 総合交流 seems to turn it into a local Chamber of Commerce operation. A fancy visitor’s center.

BW: “Maybe it’s the Graveyard of Love?” it was such a shame that you didn’t develop that metaphor a little further..:?:

* Midnight in the Graveyard of Love and Hate * or “I’m a BodySnatcher in the Graveyard of Luurve”

Endless possibilities.
