Elvis remembered
08/16/2007 @ 12:00 am
Remora wrote in today to remind us that August 16 is the 30th anniversary of the death of The King – Elvis Presley, which will be marked by special events in Japan and elsewhere.

- Japan is the second largest market in Asia after Australia for sales of Elvis music.
- A statue of Elvis stands in Tokyo’s trendy Harajuku district, courtesy of financing by ex-prime minister Junichiro Koizumi and his brother Masaya.
- A website named Elvis World – Japan provides Japanese readers with up-to-date information about the latest news in the Elvis universe.
it must be a busy 48hrs for ex-PM Koizumi first a visit to Yasukuni followed by The King’s 30th anniversary celebrations.
There’s a connection there somewhere, but I just can’t spot it.

August 16th, 2007 at 7:50 amgot on my ‘blue suede shoes’ & heading to the ‘heartbreak hotel’ to have a drink for the KING cause I’m ‘all shook up’ about these ‘hound dog’ posts on Japundit, but ‘don’t be cruel’ cause a ‘hard headed woman’ ‘can’t help falling in love’ with ‘king creole’ who lives ‘in the ghetto’ with his ‘teddy bear’.
August 16th, 2007 at 8:29 amthat’s all right mama bird - (calm down and have a cup of tea).
August 16th, 2007 at 8:42 amwell, there was a report of a specially hired train named the “Mystery Train” carrying fans from around Japan to Tokyo to visit the Big Elvis, but when I tried to track down more info on this event (plus pix & vids) I accidentally turned up this report about an ultra-low emission train which has just been introduced onto Japan’s rail network.

well, when not quite as newsworthy as the passing of the King, it still merits some interest. (Thankyou)

August 17th, 2007 at 12:14 pmone of the most off-beat references to Elvis and Japan is in the movie American Yakuza 2 (Back to Back) with Ryo Ishibashi and Koh Takasugiashi (Hideo).
Where Hideo is an Elvis obsessed Yakuza hitman who has a vision of the King whilst bleeding to death in the final scene.
Complete crap movie - but kinda touching and..and (sniff!).

August 17th, 2007 at 1:25 pmwell, seeing that things have been rather quiet so far today (probably the heat) I’ll add this last thing on Elvis just for the record (pun intended).
Also for the Pizza and JP’s cold dead hand….

Back to normal posting schedule from tomorrow.
