September 8th, 2007 at 5:21 pmI was under the impression “otaku” originally referred to guys obsessed with manga, but that the definition was broadened after the Tsutomu Miyazaki affair. Does anyone know for sure?
September 8th, 2007 at 7:42 pmIn Japan, the term otaku can refer to someone who is overly obsessive about some singular theme, topic, hobby, etc. It is no longer limited to manga and anime and it is not misused in this post.
September 8th, 2007 at 8:13 pmOtaku = nerd is a good working translation…. But for ‘low’ culture - you don’t generally call a PhD academic who devotes his life to the development of Jomon pots an ‘otaku’. The word originated from ‘お宅’, a word meaning ‘you’ (not ‘house’). As in “what do you [otaku] think of Neo-Genesis Evangelion’s Gundam Rose of Versailles Space Battleship Yamato?”
Wiki Japan has an overly-long (and dare I say, otaku-style obsessive) article on the subject.
September 8th, 2007 at 9:31 pm” Otaku ” meant initially negative (as Overthinker). It was not only nerd or geek, but sometimes creep or sick. (Especially for young girls.) But lately it could also mean relatively positive (as JP or animes). It varies.
According to Otaku-gaku(Otakuology) Otaku devotes to subculture(which doesn’t belong to main stream). They are manga, anime, computer game, figures, idols love or maniac fans for some hobbies. Today they are becoming big industry in Japan(Akihabara).
The genre 少女漫画 Shojo Manga (made for girls) is specific Japanese. The famous ones are ” Sailor Moon “, ” Nana ” and ” Hana Yori Dango “. Shonen-Ai is completely foreign for me. (It became English like Hentai.)
