Be an English teacher in beautiful, sunny Pyongyang

The modern lifestyle of running water, electricity on demand, and abundant food, clothing, and shelter got you down?
Well, why not cast your fate (and perhaps your very life) to the wind and head on over to Pyongyang for a 10-month stint of teaching English?
The British Council, which serves as the Cultural and Education Section of the British Embassy in China, is accepting applications from ELT professionals to work for an English language project in North Korea.
No Yanks allowed, though. Local restrictions allow only U.K. passport holders to be considered.
I wonder. . . Does this mean that the NORKS will no longer be kidnapping their teachers?

The British Council page kindly notes that “Benefits including free accommodation, medical insurance and pension provision.” Yup, definitely keen to stay on in Nork until my pension kicks in….
September 8th, 2007 at 8:17 amIt’s rather obvious the intent here. Once in NK, the teachers will be forced to breed little white spies for the NK regime, who will be sent overseas after their indoctrination. The teacher themselves will be returned after several years and, one year in NK being equal to 10 years elsewhere, they will be small, shriveled and barely coherent. They will build new and successful lives in politics.
You heard it here first.
September 8th, 2007 at 9:09 amWhile I wouldn’t approve of this kind of support for the NK regime, I’d love to have this opportunity to gain such an arcane experience.
September 8th, 2007 at 4:52 pmOf course, I know you wouldn’t be given much opportunity to experience anything other than teaching the coddled elite in cozy(ish) Pyongyang, but still…
Speak for yourself. It would drive me nuts in about six hours. There is NO way I could refrain from making sarcastic comments about the Dear Leader’s golf game (his current record: 18 holes in only 12 strokes) or any of the other miracles he performs that will no doubt lead to his elevation to sainthood faster than you can say “Mother Theresa”….
September 8th, 2007 at 7:19 pmHey, can we nominate people?. I know an English who owes NK about 5000 hours civil service in restitution for his crimes against them, where can I send his name?.
