Tani’s back!

Ryoko Tani wins gold at the 2007 World Judo Championship in Rio de Janeiro

Twice-Olympic-champion Judo wrestler, the ever popular Ryoko Tani, took a record seventh world gold by beating Cuba’s Yanet Bermoy in the under 48kg class. She’s been out of the game for the best part of three years, having taken time out to have a child.

She wasn’t the only gold medallist -

Japan won another gold in the women’s open class with Olympic champion Maki Tsukada, who defeated Lucija Polauder of Slovakia in the final.

Yasuyuki Muneta beat Jury Rybak of Belarus to win the men’s open class and give Japan its third gold of the tournament.

Last week the upset defeat of several Japanese judo stars had sports commentators here bemoaning the death of Japanese judo because the Foreigners have no appreciation for the pure Japanese version of the sport. Now Tani and two other gold medalists have pulled Japan into a three-way tie for gold medals, and counting all medals Japan is alone at the top.

The reports of the death of Japanese judo are greatly exaggerated.

I liked the news headline: Mama demo kin-medaru? She is amazing even after having a kid.

Yes, she is the Judo legend. According to the newspaper, her husband Yoshitomo Tani (a professional baseball player) says she nurses her baby and does sufficient housework while she is at home. And she was feeding on mother’s milk for her baby in the intervals of practices at the judo training camp !
