Twang your magic twanger

I don’t know about you, but this University of Tokyo robot (named Mowgli) makes me feel a bit uneasy. . . Everytime I look at the video clip I get an image of the thing jumping up on someone’s back and injecting something into their neck. . .
Via The Raw Feed
Note how his forward momentum would probably propel him over the other side if the back of the chair wasn’t there. The only exception is the first jump, in which he seems to be leaning backwards in order to counteract that effect, and ends up wobbling quite a bit on landing.
So don’t worry, JP; unless they install spikes in his feet, with which he can claw footholds into your back, I think you’re safe from being stabbed in the neck. The thing’s so unstable it’d probably miss, anyway.
This kind of movement in a robot is a real achievement, though. I wish there was more information. Can the robot sense its own state of balance? The article says it can also jump back down after jumping on something. Does this require the robot to have landed perfectly, or can it adjust?
Robots are cool :>

Those are very comforting words.
September 30th, 2007 at 11:30 amI had no idea until now that Mowgli was sometimes referred to as “Mowgli the Frog” (due to his lack of fur).
