Rookie Hamilton victorious at rainy Fuji
With just two races left in the Formula 1 season, British driver Lewis Hamilton, in his first year, edged closer to what would be a historic championship win by claiming victory in yesterday’s Japanese Grand Prix at the Fuji circuit.
No driver in Formula 1 history has won the championship in his rookie year, but with Hamilton now holding a lead of 12 points with two rounds remaining, victory will be his if he finishes ahead of defending champion and team-mate, Spain’s Fernando Alonso, in next week’s Chinese Grand Prix at the Shanghai circuit.
Details of yesterday’s rain-soaked race here, here and here.
It’s been quite a season for the outspoken 22-year-old McLaren driver. He currently shares the record (with Canada’s Jacques Villeneuve) for most wins in a first season - 4. He also created a phenomenal record of ‘9 consecutive podiums [finishing a race in the top 3] from debut race’, beating the previous record of 2. Fingers crossed for the remaining races!
He definitely deserves to win the championship - I can’t remember seeing such a class young driver before.
