Nanjing Massacre. . . Fact or fiction?

A new movie out of Japan named The Truth About Nanjing attempts to claim that the Nanjing Massacre never happened.

According to Satoru Mizushima, the film’s director, “There is one indisputable fact: there was no massacre at Nanjing. We don’t want our children to grow up thinking Japan is a barbarian country.”

A preview of the highlights of the film, which is backed by ultra-conservatives including Tokyo governor Shintaro Ishihara, included newsreel footage of Japanese Imperial army officers entering Nanjing on horseback while soldiers stand to attention.

“The entry of the Japanese military brought peace and order to the people of the city,” read the subtitles.
Japanese veterans who served in the area at the time were shown denying any large-scale violence against civilians.

The film is based on the writings of Shudo Higashinakano, who asserts that the Nanking Massacre story as invented by Americans and Europeans who were living in Nanjing at the time.

Director Mizushima is also on record claiming that Japanese war criminals martyrs sacrificed to atone for the sins of Japan, making them similar to Jesus Christ.

They resemble Jesus Christ who was nailed to the cross in order to bear the sins of the world. They died bearing all of old Japan’s good and bad parts and headed for the gallows.

whenever you hear someone comparing their cause to Jesus Christ on the cross, they are a bunch of jackasses

How do they explain away Japanese newspapers reporting about a contest two officers had going in Nanjing regarding who could behead the most Chinese?

I guess it’s easier to deny you are a barbarian country than it is to apologize for barbaric behavior and get past it.

So the Nanjing Massacre was just a racially-motivated conspiracy by White people to defame the Japanese? The idea that such a movie is able to be made is just disgusting.

Germany would never allow for holocaust denial movies to even get any kind of support from wealthy right-wingers, and government officials

I can’t find the article at the moment (maybe from Japan Focus?), but I believe the beheading race turned out to be a fabrication of a bragging soldier and a journalist looking for a sensational story. That’s not to say Japanese soldiers didn’t do some barbaric things, especially around Nanking.

Most people know these right wingers are nut cases. I think you’ll find most Japanese don’t even like them or believe them (witness the relatively swift demise of the Tsukurukai and the lack of schools using their textbook). I’d be willing to bet that only a very small number of Japanese actually go to see the movie. Think of it as an angry response to the movie based on Iris Chang’s book.

It was a war! War is Hell! America did brutal things too: the firebombings of Tokyo and other cities because they knew Japanese houses were wood and paper. The Atomic Bombs! Does anyone think they were trying not to kill civilians?
What happened at Nanking was brutal, but there is evidence that it was also exaggerated. It’s now become a propaganda war, and Japan has a right to fight back.
Besides, after what they did in Tibet, China cannot talk!
