Not to be confused with the summer lantern festival, the Toro Roman (灯籠浪漫) festival is a welcome burst of colour and winter warmth in the old town of Yamaga, Kumamoto prefecture.
You can read an excellent write-up of both summer and winter festivals here (and the same page in Japanese here). I’m just here to show you pretty pictures!
More of the same after the jump!
For about a month from late January, the narrow streets of the old part of the town are illuminated by lamps made of bamboo…

In some courtyards, the displays are even more elaborate.

And at a shrine behind the main streets, the atmosphere was breathtaking.

You took these photos, overoften? I don’t normally comment on these sorts of posts but these are amazing enough to warrant a quick note: Nice!
What stunningly beautiful pictures. Nice buy with that new camera!
Who wrote the manual for the camera? No seriously, these are gorgeous photos and convey the atmosphere of light, dark, paper and candles . . . I’m glad you were there to experience and record the scenery.
I see that you are following your Dad’s wishes overoften (a.k.a. - Young Snowden to his pals)..
money well spent Jon - I look forward to much more of the same in future posts.
Great stuff.
