From Your Annoying Hybrid . . .

The ever entertaining blog Stuff White People Like expresses its views on yellow fever, and throws out the statistic that 98% of white guys at some point have suffered from it.
Another factor that draws white guys to asian women is that white women are jealous of them.
Take for instance the fact that asian women well into their 30s and 40s retain teen / college girl looks without the help of botox, yoga or a trendy diet (future posts). Asian women also avoid key white women characteristics such as having a mid life crisis, divorce, and hobbies that don’t involve taking care of the children (also future posts). Should white guy / asian girl marry, they produce hybirds that are aestically pleasing, but are very annoying.
I think he meant “aesthetically pleasing.” Wasn’t it annoying that I pointed that out?
Updated: White people like Japan too. But you already knew that.
I’ve read some of that blog, thrown as it was in my face courtesy of Wordpress. Thanks, WP, for that. When he says ‘White People’, I can only assume he means ‘American, 20/30something, big-city, mid/hi-income hipsters’ (but saying that would narrow the appeal, I’m guessing). Which means I reckon he’ll run out of ‘things they like’ before the summer’s here.

March 4th, 2008 at 7:54 pmMarie, shame on you, you made me click on that sad little site.
He must be one of those guys who thinks saying “I love Asian women” to an Asian woman he’s just met is something they would appreciate.
March 4th, 2008 at 8:09 pmThanks for posting the link TU, but it actually is just another re-hash of a tired old story that has been around for as long as I have been here, and probably long before then.
It’s always the same story. . . some middle-aged white woman suddenly slips into the old “most white men who marry Japanese women only do so because they are flawed socially and/or sexually” riff thinking she is being cute.
Actually, however, all she ever ends up accomplishing is validating just almost every negative stereotype about middle-aged white women out there.
March 4th, 2008 at 11:35 pmHahaha! Well, I think the site does a fairly good job of nailing a certain kind of bi-coastal urban dweller (and maybe even some people in between the coasts).
As for Tofu Union’s link, well, I have to say that the woman quoted isn’t totally without a point. Yes, of course people get married and go on to have genuine relationships and simple stereotyping is sort of, well, simple (as opposed to satire which is supposed to be funny). But there certainly have been times when I’ve seen some guy in Japan and thought, “Right. You would never be considered hot at home. But you are here for some mysterious reason.”
There used to be this guy on TV, for example, who was a talento and who spoke really good Japanese. And everyone thought he was so charming and cute and funny! And there was no way he ever would have been considered so at home in the States.
So, if these comments validate ME as a stereotypical middle-aged white woman . . . well I’m not exactly white . . .
March 5th, 2008 at 12:45 amWhite people like Japan because they don’t know much about it.
March 5th, 2008 at 2:28 amGet a load of the comments on that site. Ugh.
Paul, some of us like Japan precisely because we do know a bit about it.
March 5th, 2008 at 12:04 pmYea, I’ve met a lot of white guys in Japan who would be total social misfits at home, and vice versa. I guess there must be some reason for a person to leave his or her homeland.
I’m in Japan half the year and America the other half, does that make my wife and I both misfits? I don’t think so, but I may be prejudiced.
March 6th, 2008 at 7:33 amsome of us have little choice (but like Japan).
March 6th, 2008 at 9:15 am..oh, and I forgot they will all be indistinguishable from us fairly soon.
“Fair-ly Soon”..(what an awful pun remora!)..Fei Li Soon
“Possibly the biggest potential for the technology will be the China cosmetics market, where growth is continuing apace. Driven by treatments such as skin whitening products, the market for cosmetics in China is estimated to be worth €4 billion, a figure that experts say could grow ten-fold by the year 2010.”

Last evening I watched a Deutsche Welle segment on the explosion of Skin Whitening Products in China,Japan and India…
They might consider themselves superior to us - but they sure as heck wanna look like us….I wonder why?

March 6th, 2008 at 9:30 amTo have white skin isn’t really the correct term but “paler” is a better one. The whole idea behind asia and its obsession with white skin goes way back, that people today sometimes forgets the whole reason why they want it other than its the thing that is “in.”
1. Climate: Asia is usually hella hot. Lots of sun beating down on you. It isn’t really hard at all to get tan there if you have the genes to tan.
2. Socioeconomic class: Natuarally the wealthy who had other people doing the physical work for them could stay inside and relax, meaning less time in the sun. Thus less melanin to tan you. Only people subjected to physical work, especially a farmer who spends most of time doing hard work to feed your family. Having pale skin in females has also been related to a purity and delicacy that is supposedly alluring. (ie snow white)
conclusion: Only the rich could afford to keep their skin pale, naturally the rich are elevated to some celebrity/evil-doer status that starts another trend the “commoners” mimic. And on a side note there is that forever controversy of lighter-skin being the “lesser evil”
March 6th, 2008 at 12:28 pm“Hella hot.” You must be in or near SF!
