Knife-proof shirts

From Yomiuri Shimbun:

A uniform manufacturer in Chuo Ward, Osaka, has developed a T-shirt intended to provide protection against knives, following an increasing number of malicious crimes that have victimized children and late-night convenience store clerks.

Sounds pretty ridiculous; almost as stupid as the parents in the US who want to have bullet-resistant backpacks made for their kids.

Unfortunately, that’s human nature — we tend to over-estimate the exotic/uncommon and blow off the mundane threats. These kids (both Japan and US) are probably far more likely to die by being hit by a car on the way to school, or have their school bus be involved in a car accident. And even if one entertains the remote possibility that a life was indeed directly saved because of a slash resistant shirt or ballistic backpack, these things only protect against one or two things. A Kevlar shirt won’t protect kindergarteners from being hit by a blunt object, (car accident, anyone??) or overpowered and abducted by an adult. Likewise, a Kevlar backpack seems pretty pointlessl. You’re that concerned about your kid getting shot at school? The just buy them a IIIa vest. At least that will protect them from the front, back, AND sides - and do it passively too. But that won’t protect your 16 year old son from doing something stupid in the family car and getting himself and his friends killed. (You figure out which one is more likely - getting shot at school or flipping the family mini-van because of little driving experience)
