JAPUNDIT Open Thread - 014

We have not had an Open Thread for a while because of all the great things to report on, but a hectic schedule this weekend is limiting my time so here you go.

As usual, readers are invited to discuss things that have been on their minds, regardless of whether they are on topic.

If you are dying to say something that normally would be deleted under comment rules, here is your chance. Rules are very loose for open thread posts, and usual restrictions concerning topic matter do not apply.

Feel free to sound off about anything you want.

I watched a couple of these and I really like the idea of combining Poetry with Video

    http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.individual&VideoID=17187833

The only downside was as one of the commenters pointed out, the size and sharpness of the text - outher than that, brilliant!.

All of the talk about food here lately made me hungry. Anyone have a japanese recipe they want to share? Here’s a favorite of mine. It’s from my favorite Seattle izakaya, Maekawa-

    Renkon Butter
    Serves 2 as an appetizer

5-6 slices of lotus root, peeled, cut to 3mm width
    1 1/2 T butter
    Soy sauce
Handful of large dried bonito flakes

Put a sauté pan over medium-high heat. Melt the butter until just about browned. Add the slices of lotus root and cook for several minutes, turning so both sides cook fully and the edges are light brown. Add a dash or two of soy sauce and let it soak into the lotus root as you take the pan off the heat. Transfer the slices to a shallow bowl and cover with the bonito flakes. Serve.

not exactly a japanese recipe, more of an adaptation of a french recipe adapted into an american recipe, but it works.

1 to 1.25 lbs of cabbage
1.25 lbs of sausage (your choice)
.5 to 1 lb of daikon radish

    4 tablespoons of melted butter
3 cups water or chicken broth
    3 cups milk
    salt and pepper
    1/8 tsp oregano (optional)
    1/8 tsp thyme (optional)

1 heaping spoon of sour cream (per bowl)

first boil the spinach for 3 mins in a pot, then strain

dump the water and add three cups of fresh water, bring to a boil, add the milk and melted butter, again bring to a boil.

add the (sliced) sausage and (sliced daikon) and lower heat to a simmer, put a lid on the pot and let simmer for 40 mins, stirring occasionally.

add the cabbage back and simmer for 7 more mins.

take pot off heat, let sit for a few minutes.

serve with a spoonful of sour cream stirred into the soup.

    should provide four large servings

    Bit scary, fella.

Am I to believe that esotericlarity is the only other one here with kitchen skills?

C’mon Ed what do you do with all of that garlic you grow, throw it at the neighbors cat? Overoften, surely you subside on more than exotic flavored KitKats! And Remora, I just looked up what remora’s eat… ughh I hope wikipedia is wrong about you.

    Pony up!

well len, wikipedia isn’t always the best source of information if one is seeking information about the remora.

I would suggest a more authoratative and marine based website..as one Marine Biologist has noted whilst studying a remora in a large laboratory tank

“It would eat almost anything..including beer nuts!”

and as to EC’s garlic?..well one can only hazard a guess that either he is making a huge batch of Garlic & Fernet Branca Ice Cream in preparation for Summer or maybe he is on the trail of the dreaded Tochigi Vampire..

*hope I was able to be of assistance*

authoritative is not a word that I’m used to using. In fact I never use it in my work, due the brow beating advice of company lawyers who tell me that words like expert or guru won’t stand up in court.

I Miss Pelled it because I’m on my hols and my brain is on an extended lunch.

Remoras are brown but in illustrations they are blue, no one knows why.

They are shorter in real life than they appear on blogs.

    They are right about autumn.

    Diet still suspect.

I read recently that Beauty (from the Japanese Perspective) is closely related with Death.
Poetry is a broad church …anything from elegies to love sonnets.

    and just as a ..

“We were on the Isle of Adak one summer day
The Seventh called for help, and they took us away
We boarded a boat, and sailed the blue
For an Island known as Attu.
The Japs were here, and very much alive
The Seventh was glad to see us arrive
For five days they had struggled desperately
To drive the Japs back from the sea.

And they had fought them round and round
and had failed to gain but little ground
Here in the valley dug in deep,
couldn’t take the hills, too damn steep.

We looked at the mountains capped with snow
and listened to the Seventh’s tales of woe
To us they didn’t look so very big
For we were hardened with fatigue.

The 32nd was exhausted from lack of sleep
Were wet and cold, and had frozen feet.
We said, boys move to the rear and have no fear
the 4th will take it on from here.

To get at the Japs we could not wait
They said when we were through we’d go to the States
The 32nd said they too would go
They had to get back to the U.S.O.

So with that in mind, we started to fight
we battled them desperately day and night.
Though many of our buddies by the wayside fell
we busted the Jap lines all to hell.

The weather was bad, it snowed and hailed
but we took ground, where the 32nd failed.
They’d say to us “Get that machine gun nest”
so we can move up and get some rest.

We’d moved up and take the place
then for our foxholes they would madly race.
    They would say “That’s fine,
now move up and establish another new line!”

We didn’t mind that so bad
them taking all the credit is what makes us mad.
Though tired and sick we were from lack of rest
To whip the Japs we did our best.

Over rock hills covered with snow
we took places they didn’t think we’d go.
Though many days of freezing cold
we had at last reached our goal.

The battle was over, we had won
    We’d killed every Jap son-of-a-gun.
Now on the way down we remembered well
they said we’d go to the States, sure as hell.

But now it is over, our job is through
They leave us here to rot, on Attu.

And now the Japs are dead in their grave
    the 32nd talks mighty brave.
but for all we care, they can have the glory of the strife
What we want is some U.S.O. life!

but all we can do is sit in silent bliss
and listen to each other piss
O God before we’re called before the Pearly Gates
Please take us back to the United States.”

As for favorite recipes, Len, I regret to say I am an eater not a cooker.

I do prepare dishes for myself, but none that are very artistic. . . I leave that kind of thing up to Mrs. JP because she is so darn good at it.
