Mr. T Said:

I’m happy for this town getting its share of publicity. They look like a good and happy people. I was optimistic about Obama (the politician) at first but after hearing what he has planned or wants to do, I have come to the conclusion that he is clueless. I believe he would be a disaster on the scale of making Jimmy Carter look good. It is amazing that in America so many focus on how politicians look and speak rather than in the content of what they say.

First of all, “obaka” would just be “a fool,” as in the current “obaka boom” that has unfortunately made stars of Yūsuke Kamiji, et al. Ōbaka would be a big fool, but…

What’s stupid or foolish about any of this? I don’t see anything wrong with anything in that video, except for the reporter saying that the burger contains fish “because it’s Japan.” As if beef burgers are unheard of or something.

Edward Chmura Said:

First of all, I wrote the headline without going through the trouble of representing the long “O”, since that is the way it is often done when writing for a native English audience.

Also, the headline does not necessarily mean anything in the video is stupid or foolish. It was a bit of a word play on the English expression “go crazy for” using a Japanese word that is similar to “Obama.”

Anyway, lighten up.

amake Said:

Well given that you wrote it in a way that clearly conflicts with a distinct word that has received broad and recent media attention, I think it’s a bit confusing.

And I don’t think it’s at all clear that you were simply engaging in wordplay. I read it as a criticism of the people of Obama (basically you called them “big fools”), and I don’t think that’s an unreasonable interpretation given how little explanation was in the post itself.

I don’t mean to be overly critical here; this was my honest reading of your post, which doesn’t seem to match your intent at all.

amake Said:

To clarify my misunderstanding, I read it as meaning “Obama fools support Obama.” Perhaps it would have been clearer as “Obama goes baka for Obama?”

Edward Chmura Said:

I can see how you might get that impression. I changed the title to make it clearer.

TofuUnion Said:

I liked it better with “Obama Obaka for Obama”. ( Obaka as big fool.)

The people who are making Obama chop sticks, T-shirts and manju sweet cakes, just want to make money by using the name “Obama”. Otherwise how can they be interested in the election of US presidency, let in cheering Mr. Obama ?

And Obama mayor is a fool, if not a big fool, because he is doing that trivial thing by using tax.

ghoti Said:

Well, wait until he sees the trade sanctions President Obama will put in place against Japan. He will never live it down.

remora Said:

but ghoti the Japanese Public has long discarded the notion of yamu wo enai with America - now it is based on “Mutual Distrust ..(too many promises broken)

.” To forestall the possibility that this situation might ultimately explode in a flash of all-out hostility to the U.S., Ambassador MacArthur soon fell in with Kishi’s insistence that the time had come for American concessions designed to convert the Japanese public from yamu wo enai to a relationship of “mutual trust” with the U.S. ”

Obama talking to Kim Jong IL without any preconditions can’t be a good thing for Japan. Are they still abducting Japanese fishermen?
