when I first encountered Japan I tried to “find my feet” by focusing on the familiar.
What was there Here - that I had known Elsewhere?.
It wasn’t too hard to make a list..
Trains,Cars,Birds,Trees,A Lake with Swans and Sculpture,Bicycles,Snow,Television,Music,Vegetables..and Flowers!
Luckily, I crash-landed in a semi-rural region (the much disparaged Inaka)..so the transition wasn’t to difficult and flowers an important part of my early childhood remain a soothing and comforting part of my present World.
I lived for a number of years in the Tyrol and I can honestly say that the leather pants-slapping Tyrolese with their two-faced faux-gemütlichkeit come a very poor second to the Japanese in regard to appreciating Flowers.
(Azaleas in endless flower boxes just don’t do it for me I’m afraid).
Lastly the Garden in the Post is located in Saitama colloqually known as Ugly Saitama..well make your own mind.

and then - I could do anything”
A.A.Milne
If only I were the King of Japan
I’d get to work at once on my Plan
Roll up my sleeves & take off my Crown
Summon the court and say “Gather Around”
Now listen - I’d stutteringly tell them
For too long The Kingdom has been allowed to decay
My people seem sad and depressed
and the children have nowhere to play
Where are the parks full of wonderful flowers
the places to spend a few quiet peaceful hours?
Well from today I decree “All that will change”
Send the Royal Gardener’s thru-out the Land
and tell the people of the King’s New Plan
- You will have Flowers!
(If I were the King of Japan)
*don’t forget to say your prayers tonite Christopher Robin*
