Though I have been really critical of Michelle Wie in the past (here and here), I must admit that I ended feeling pretty sorry for the young girl after her most recent mishap on the golf course when she was disqualified from a golf tournament for signing her scorecard “too late.”
Wie said that after she finished her round on Friday, she left the tent where players sign their scorecards and was chased down by some of the volunteers working in the tent who pointed out she hadn’t signed.
Wie returned to the tent and signed the card.
“I thought it would be OK,” she said.
But Wie, according to Witters, had already walked outside the roped-off area around the tent. At that point, the mistake was final.
Witters said she and other tour officials didn’t learn about the error from volunteers until well after Wie teed off Saturday. They let her finish the round, then took her to the office where she and her caddy, Tim Vickers, were informed of the ruling.
Wie was in second place, only one shot back, when she was disqualified.
After reading this, I hereby no longer feel a ounce of pity for this woman.
Someone has got to talk some sense into her. She is old enough now to stop taking her clueless father’s direction.
She’s not even good enough for the womens circuit. Why the hell is she still trying to make a mens tournament?
Until she starts winning against the women (or at least consistently placing highly), she’s a circus sideshow, nothing more or less. I think the only reason she got this big is the media was dying for a female Tiger Woods and she seemed good enough at a young age. Tiger went to college and consistently won at a young age against quality competition.
I’m also against the whole “women in a men’s tournament”. Would they allow a man into a women’s tourney? Of course not. If there was no women’s tour, then I’d be fine with it, but they each have their own tours, so unless it can go both ways, they shouldn’t mix (a scramble or best ball with top male and female player teams would be fun, though).
Also, talk about a stupid mistake for a supposedly top player. You ALWAYS sign a card before doing anything else. Hasn’t she had another DQ or two due to breaking the rules?
I do feel sorry for Michelle Wie because she doesn’t have the same kind of parents that Tiger was lucky enough to have. I think she is extremely talented and is a very intelligent young lady. However, her parents (and maybe her agent?) are giving her all the wrong advice when it comes to entering tournaments. A few years back she almost made the cut at the Sony Open (missed by one shot). I think that experience has made her believe that she is better than she really is. As Tiger has said repeatedly, the Big Wiesy should stick to LPGA tournaments and learn how to win playing against other females. If she ever becomes as dominant as Annika Sorenstam on the LPGA, then she can start to think about entering a PGA event. As much as she supposedly looks up to Tiger, it’s too bad she doesn’t heed his advice.

Wasn’t her father, if not outright banned, told informally it would be better if he wasn’t around at tournaments?
I think her father was told to back off, especially when he was her caddy. I thought he was actually banned from being her caddy, but I can’t find any articles about it.
