» by Edward Chmura August 7th, 2008 at 12:00 pm » Comments (7)

A restaurant located at the Naokata City, Fukuoka prefecture government office building has added a new Oppai Lunch (Breast Lunch) to their menu to mark the release of the movie Oppai Volley (Breast Volleyball), which was shot in the city.
The Oppai Lunch consists of two cups of breast-shaped chicken rice with strategically placed green peas, […]

Okonomiyaki

» by Guest August 7th, 2008 at 12:00 am » Comments (0)

Last night my girlfriend and I had some friends over and we made okonomiyaki. I had never had it before, but had heard about it from various Japanese friends, and was excited to try it for the first time. It’s sort of like a Japanese pancake, but mixed with various goodies and topped with sauces […]

Japanese hot dog pizza

What the heck is wrong with Japanese people? They made a pizza with hot dogs in the crust.

Dog day afternoon drinking

» by overoften July 30th, 2008 at 12:00 am » Comments (2)

The temperature in my house was over 30 when I awoke, sweating and fully unrested at 7.30 this morning. We’re in for a warm one.
And if ice cream is too fattening, and solace can’t be found in only-good-for-one-glass Japanese beer, what respite is there?
One recommended way of dealing with the oppressive summer is apparently […]

Benihana’s Founder Dies

» by Brian Engel July 29th, 2008 at 12:00 am » Comments (4)

A couple of weeks ago, the New York Times reported that Benihana’s (chain of restaurants) founder Rocky Aoki has died at age 69. He was a colorful personality (see below).
 As for the restaurants:

Benihana’s style of food is called teppan-yaki. Eating there is “equal parts restaurant, magic show and performance art,” said David Rockwell.

There is a Benihana’s […]

Mm, Seafood Paste

» by Peter Payne July 23rd, 2008 at 12:00 am » Comments (5)

Have you had Tuna Spaghetti recently?
I did for lunch the other day, and it was really good, a fresh marinara sauce with chunks of white tuna and several stalks of asparagus on top.
I don’t remember seeing much in the way of seafood pasta dishes in the States, but they’re among my favorites here […]

Doggone Olympics

» by Edward Chmura July 11th, 2008 at 6:00 am » Comments (4)

According to Danwei, the Beijing City Government Food Safety Office reportedly is sending out notices putting restrictions on the serving, transport and sale of dog meat during the Olympics.
The main thrust of the notice is that all meat transported into Beijing during the Olympics will be thoroughly checked, and that the 112 […]

Ninniku Monogatari - Part 7 (The Final Verdict)

» by Edward Chmura July 9th, 2008 at 6:00 am » Comments (17)

Last week we noticed that the tops of our garlic plants had died off quite extensively, indicating that it was time to pull them out of the ground and harvest their bulbs.

Carefully making sure that that we did not get them mixed up, we first pulled up some of my plants.

Next we pulled up Mrs. […]

On Denny’s and Seven-Eleven

» by Peter Payne July 8th, 2008 at 6:00 am » Comments (9)

If you ever want to appreciate your local Denny’s, I advise you to go live in Japan for a few years.
It’s not that Denny’s Japan is all that bad — it’s actually one of my top picks for late-night “family restaurant” coffee and dining — but something about it just doesn’t satisfy the American […]

Healthy Japanese Diet?

» by Brian Engel July 7th, 2008 at 6:00 pm » Comments (1)

I guess not *all* Japanese are eating healthfully. ESPN is reporting that 6-time Nathan’s hot dog eating champion Takeru Kobayashi lost for the second year in a row to his rival Joey Chestnut; this time in an unprecedented overtime period. Kobayashi is 30 years old and from Nagano. Do you think he trains for these […]

To bean or not to bean?

» by Edward Chmura July 7th, 2008 at 12:00 pm » Comments (4)

Meat is a killer and should be avoided, and you should get your protein by eating plenty of soy products like tofu, right?
Not necessarily so if research coming out of the U.K. is to be believed. According to a study led by Loughborough University and reported on in the journal Dementias and Geriatric Cognitive […]

Japanese Whaling

» by Brian Engel July 5th, 2008 at 12:00 am » Comments (4)

Newsweek has an online article about whaling, focusing on Japan and the upcoming International Whaling Commission (IWC) meeting. It is an interesting topic which pits national sovereignty against international consensus with no easy or obvious solution.

The Japanese delegation at the IWC parley is expected to lobby other countries to relax the moratorium on worldwide commercial whaling […]

Floridians like it raw

» by Edward Chmura June 30th, 2008 at 6:00 am » Comments (8)

The other day it was a maid cafe in Culver City, now we get word that naked sushi has made its way to Clearwater, Florida.
CLEARWATER — Chef David Keir looks out over the crowd in the dark, smoke-filled lounge, then slowly slides the model’s black kimono off her body.
She’s wearing the smallest of G-strings and […]

Japan Slimming Down?

» by Brian Engel June 15th, 2008 at 9:00 am » Comments (5)

Norimitsu Onishi is reporting in the New York Times about a new program in Japan to slim down. It’s hard to believe on many levels. First, Japan has to have one of the healthiest and slimmest populations in the world. Second, it’s hard to believe that the government will get away with imposing these measures […]

Ninniku Monogatari - Part 6

» by Edward Chmura June 13th, 2008 at 6:00 pm » Comments (7)

Just a quick note to let everyone know that our garlic patch is flowering, right on schedule. Garlic flowers (also known as “scapes” and “top sets”) can be cut off and eaten when young and tender, or they can be allowed to develop into bulbils.

We are now officially into the homestretch. In a few weeks […]

A brand new bakery opened in Tokyo on May 5th. The shop is called Shirohige no shou cream kobo (which means White-bearded’ cream puff workshop).
A perfect opening for Kodomo no Hi (Children’s Day), the shop sells cream puff Totoros and sold out of them in the first ten minutes of opening!
The store […]
